MK vs DC - Revisited

After having a month to cool down, I’ve started to rethink my views on MK vs DC.

I don’t think it’s going to suck as hard as I initially though.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think this is going to be the Mortal Kombat game that we’ve been waiting for since Deadly Alliance. I do, however, think it’s going to be a decent game to get a bunch of your friends together and play with.

As long as I accept it as just another button-mashing fighting game, I think I might *gasp* enjoy it.

Anyway, in case you haven’t been paying attention to the MK vs DC news, we have true confirmation on:

DC

  1. Superman
  2. Batman
  3. The Flash

MK

  1. Scorpion
  2. Sub-Zero
  3. Sonya Blade

Since it’s been rumored that there will be ten from each side, I’m wondering if we’re going to end up with the MK 1 roster. I doubt it though, as most of the MK 2 roster remain popular too. No matter what, someone is going to be bitterly disappointed (as will I, if I don’t see some Wonder Woman soon.)

It really is the pictures that makes the costume sometimes.

It’s refreshing to see something besides T&A in MK fanart.

Buy Me a Coffee?

Way back when, a very enterprising group of fans created the MK Omniverse, a combination of movie canon and original characters. While I am no longer able to dig up the site, I have found the stories on fanfiction.net

The stories mostly feature on Rayden, his family and the core group of characters from the movies, and the author(s) have created a whole pantheon of bickering gods and goddesses who interact with mortals.

I’ll start you off with what I think is the first story you should read, and you can view Biku’s profile to find the rest.

Title: Moral Konflict
Author: Biku
Rating: K
Warnings: None
Complete: Yes
Word Count: 11,280
Summary: Rayden enlists the help of Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage to help him save the Omniverse from a mad Immortal.
Link: On Fanfiction.net

Rayden’s portal dissolved, so that the landscape around them faded into view. “This is the Omniversal Hall,” Rayden told them, gesturing towards a large stone building in the distance. “I have to look for someone here.”

He started forward, but when the others began to follow, he turned and shook his head. “The Hall is not a place for mortals. Too much goes on inside, and I don’t know if I’d be able to protect you.”

“Protect us from what?” scoffed Sonya. “This place is dead. There’s no one around.”

At that moment, there was a sudden explosion at the Hall. Huge amounts of energy poured through windows and doors as if a bomb had gone off. Someone staggered out the main doors and collapsed to the ground, disappearing in a haze of white light.

“Oh, no.” Rayden groaned. “Juanita must be having another of her tantrums.”

“Juanita?” asked Liu, Sonya and Johnny simultaneously. Rayden shrugged.

“She’s the Goddess of Heat,” Rayden explained, “and she has a fierce temper. I wonder what happened. It looks like she had another tiff with Arnold.”

“Arnold?” queried Liu.

“The God of Lamps,” Rayden said, rolling his eyes. He waved towards the place where the god had disappeared.

“Hold on–the God of Lamps–” Johnny paused on “lamps” for emphasis, then continued: “–is named Arnold?”

Rayden shrugged. “Arn’s a bit of a loser–we all think Juanita married him because she felt sorry for him. Anyway, I’ve gotta go, stay here.”

No one protested the order.

I love, love, love this! It’s creative and different and it’s someone other than Scorpion or Sub-Zero.

MK Nightblood

I’ve been meaning to feature Nightblood for quite a few months now, but never quite made it. Hopefully I can do it justice now.

Mortal Kombat Nightblood is a post based RPG set around MK3/4 with the invasion of Earthrealm underway. You can read a better description of the story at the MKNightblood site. The characters include canon characters, original player characters and NPC of both kinds, resulting in an interesting mix that allows for quite a bit of creative freedom.

Nightblood has a lot of quality control. There’s a strict character creation process and players sometimes have to go through several revisions until their original characters can fit into the existing story. In addition, proper grammar, spelling and characterization is demanded, making this RPG for mature (not that kind of mature) players only.

Yours truly has recently taken over the role of Frost and the Lin Kuei are begin to creep their way into the storyline. I find the RPG challenging as a player because there is an established power level for characters (so no having Johnny Cage taking out the Dragon King in one shot) and characters have to work together in order to accomplish things.

All in all, it’s one of the best, if not THE best, MK based roleplays.

I’m amused by the whole premise. Over at SpriteStitch, someone has made a lovely Mortal Kombat crochet square. Why? I have no clue, but it’s still awesome.

And we’re featuring this awesome piece of fanart:

There’s a color version too, but I love the grayscale art.
