Buy Me a Coffee?Sub-Zero paused in the doorway, hesitant to leave the house in its undignified state but knew there was nothing he could do to accommodate his own sensibilities without compromising his involvement. His gaze suddenly fixed upon the cat’s picture – a black kitten with jade eyes – and briefly wondered. Cats as pets was unusual here but then the old man seemed to have many unusual quirks.
A familiar impulse bid him to take the picture, preserve it from the ignoble end of being neglected in storage or thrown away and he wondered how it didn’t strike him as a morbid gesture. He knew some assassins who were fond of taking tokens to remember their victims including anything from a piece of jewellery to body parts. He kept things as well but they were reminders not trophies – gravestones to help him recall the faces, the lives. Sub-Zero liked to think remembering the faces would preserve his own humanity in the end: his last stab for redemption. It was too easy to become comfortable with murder. His brother had forgotten those he wronged and it had changed him irrevocably.
